Where you park matters more than how much you drive
Two cars can cover the same 12,000 miles a year and end up in completely different condition. The one that sits in a garage overnight is fighting road film and not much else. The one parked under a liquidambar on a Lafayette side street is fighting sap, pollen, bird droppings and UV — all of which bond to clear coat and get harder to remove the longer they sit.
Around the East Bay there are four local conditions worth naming, because each one changes the schedule:
- Tree sap and pollen — heaviest in Lafayette, Alamo and the older parts of Walnut Creek. Sap etches clear coat in summer heat. It is not a wash problem, it is a decontamination problem.
- Industrial fallout — anything parked near the strait in Martinez picks up fine metallic particles that embed in the paint. If your paint feels gritty after a wash, that's what you're feeling.
- Road dust — Livermore and the eastern end of the valley. Dust is abrasive, which is why dry-wiping a dusty car is the single fastest way to put swirl marks into it.
- Sun — we get a lot of it. Unprotected paint oxidises, dashboards crack, and untreated leather dries out and splits along the seams.
A schedule that actually works
Rather than a blanket interval, match the schedule to how the car lives:
Garage-kept commuter
A Full Detail twice a year, with a Mini Detail in between if you want it looking sharp year-round. The sealant is doing most of the work here; you're maintaining, not recovering.
Driveway or street-parked daily driver
A Full Detail every four months, then a Mini Detail monthly. This is the group that benefits most from a membership — the monthly visit costs less than letting the car go and paying for correction later.
Family car with kids or pets
Interiors fail before exteriors here. An Interior Reset every three months keeps carpets and upholstery ahead of the damage, with a Full Detail once or twice a year for the paint.
Weekend or collector car
Low mileage doesn't mean low need. Dust still bonds, leather still dries. Twice a year is plenty, but don't skip the leather conditioning.
What protection actually buys you
The word "protection" gets used loosely, so here's the plain version. A spray wax gives roughly three to five weeks of hydrophobic protection — it makes the next wash easier and that's about it. A ceramic sealant applied over clayed, decontaminated paint gives around three months of real resistance to sap, fallout and UV.
That difference is why the Full Detail includes a clay bar step. Sealant applied over contaminated paint just locks the contamination in. The prep is the product.
Signs you've already waited too long
- Paint feels rough or gritty after washing — bonded contamination, needs clay.
- Water no longer beads — the last layer of protection is gone.
- Carpets look clean but the car smells musty — moisture is sitting under the mats.
- Leather feels dry or looks lighter along seat bolsters — it's starting to crack.
None of these are emergencies. All of them get more expensive the longer you leave them.
The short version
If your car parks outside, plan on a Full Detail three times a year and top it up between visits. If it's garaged, twice a year is genuinely enough. If there are kids or a dog involved, the interior sets the schedule, not the paint.
