What a tunnel wash actually does
An automatic wash applies detergent, drags something across your paint, and blows it dry. The something varies: older tunnels use cloth strips, newer ones use foam or closed-cell brushes, and touchless washes use chemistry and high pressure instead of contact.
The issue with contact washes isn't the brushes themselves — it's that the same brushes just touched the car in front of you. Whatever grit that car was carrying is now in the material, and it goes across your clear coat under pressure.
Swirl marks, explained properly
Swirl marks are thousands of shallow scratches in the clear coat. Individually invisible; collectively they scatter light, which is why a swirled car looks hazy in direct sun and fine on an overcast day. Dark colours show them worst — black, dark grey and navy are unforgiving.
They come from grit being dragged across paint. That's it. A tunnel brush does it, but so does a dry microfibre on a dusty car, a household sponge, or a single-bucket wash where you keep dipping a dirty mitt back into clean water.
Clear coat is thin — roughly the depth of a sheet of paper on most cars. You can polish swirls out, but you're removing material to do it, and there's a finite amount available.
What a hand wash does differently
The method matters more than the product. A proper hand wash means a foam pre-soak to lift and float grit off the surface before anything touches it, then a two-bucket method — one for soap, one to rinse the mitt — so grit gets dropped in the rinse bucket instead of returning to your paint. Drying is done with plush microfibre or filtered air, never a squeegee or a chamois dragged across dry panels.
Then there's the step no automatic wash can do: decontamination. Clay lifts bonded particles — sap, fallout, rail dust, overspray — that washing physically cannot remove. Run your hand over the paint through a plastic bag after a wash. If it feels like fine sandpaper, that's contamination, and only clay takes it off.
When a quick wash is genuinely enough
Plenty of the time, honestly. If the car is a lease you're handing back in eight months, if it's a work truck, if it's white or silver where swirls barely show, or if you just need road salt off after a Tahoe trip — a $15 touchless wash is a perfectly rational choice.
Where it stops making sense is a car you actually care about, a dark colour, a new car whose factory paint you'd like to keep, or anything you plan to sell.
The cost, over a year
Weekly automatic washes at $15 come to roughly $780 a year, and the paint is measurably worse at the end of it. Two Full Details a year plus a monthly Mini Detail lands in a similar range, and the paint is better at the end than it was at the start.
The comparison people usually make — $15 versus $350 — isn't the real one. The real one is what you spend across a year, and what the car is worth when you're done with it.

Worth separating from the quality argument: mobile isn't better because it's mobile, it's better because of the hours it gives you back. There's no drop-off, no waiting room, no second trip. The car sits where it already sits — your driveway, or the office lot at Bishop Ranch — and you get it back finished.
